Because serums are the most concentrated products in a skincare system (and as a result, the priciest), consumers often try to use only a serum. The trouble is that it’s a little like deciding to get healthy by taking a multivitamin, while sitting on the couch, eating junk food. A serum is important to a skin care system, but it doesn’t tend to all of the skin’s needs. Serum works best in conjunction with a clean and organic-based 1) cleanser, 2) mist, and 3) moisturizer.

And here’s why:

Serum is a highly concentrated liquid treatment, thin enough to penetrate all three layers of the skin. This differs from a moisturizer which, due to larger molecules, penetrates only the first layer of the skin (sealing in moisture but not affecting the deeper layers of skin). When the face and neck are properly cleansed and hydrated, the serum, chock-full of antioxidant-rich ingredients, is able to deeply penetrate through all three layers of the skin, provided the chosen serum is crafted from top-shelf ingredients, of course. Applying a moisturizer on top of a serum guarantees that the serum doesn’t evaporate before it penetrates or lose its nourishing benefits.

Unrefined/whole/unprocessed oils – loaded with antioxidants, high concentrations of vitamin C, E, CO2 extracts and anti-inflammatory essential oils are what make our serums so amazing. One of our best sellers and personal favorites is our Intensive Healthy Aging Complex (that just so happens to be vegan, too!). It is so high in antioxidants from algae and berries – red micro algae, blackberry, red raspberry, cranberry – that the serum is actually orange-red in color (so be careful not to spill!). Even though it is highly therapeutic, anti-aging, and effective at filtering out harmful UV rays, I still don‘t use it, or any serum, without cleansing, hydrating and moisturizing, too. Nor do I need to use a lot of it.

That’s another truth about serum: most people use way too much. With products as concentrated as these, a few drops will do.
